Car Review : Volvo Readies 52-MPG C30 "Efficiency" Model

Volvo on Monday said it will introduce a green C30 "Efficiency" model powered by a 104-horsepower 1.6-liter turbodiesel at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. However, the company's U.S. spokesman said there are no plans to sell the vehicle in the U.S. "at this point."

Volvo spokesman Dan Johnston said: "We will not be doing anything unless this engine platform can work in all 50 states. The rest of the world gets this before our market."

Johnston said the most promising "potential" markets for the C30 Efficiency would likely be in such states as New York and California.

The C30 Efficiency gets a reduced chassis height, a new rear roof spoiler, new rear bumper, underbody panels, "optimized" engine cooling and 16-inch wheels. The gearbox has also been revised, Volvo said. The changes squeeze out slightly better fuel economy. The C30 Efficiency gets a combined 52 mpg, while the current Volvo C30 1.6D gets a combined 50 mpg. The C30 Efficiency has reduced C02 emissions "to below 120 g/km" (193 grams per mile); the current Volvo C30 emits 129 g/km of C02.

Volvo's home office said that, in addition to rolling out the C30 Efficiency, it will also show off a new diesel Powershift transmission for the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 at Frankfurt. The Powershift gearbox is made up of two clutches that work in parallel. The automaker said this setup results in no disruption in torque delivery during the gear shifting process, thus "delivering improved fuel consumption compared with a standard automatic gearbox."

Volvo explained that the two latest green efforts help to round out its green slate, which includes biofuels and hybrid technology. "Volvo is also making energy-efficiency improvements to conventional drivetrains," the company said in a statement.

Volvo also said it will "reveal future hybrid plans and new safety technologies" at Frankfurt, too. It did not give any details, however.

New car review : 2008 Honda Accord

Honda has pulled the covers off its redesigned 2008 Accord sedan and coupe, with few surprises under the sheets.

In addition to the new sheet metal, the eighth-generation Accord gets a larger, more powerful SOHC 3.5-liter iVTEC V6 that makes 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It can be mated with a five-speed automatic transmission or, on the Accord coupe only, a six-speed manual gearbox.

On the Accord sedan, the V6 features a new variable cylinder management system that permits the engine to run on three, four or six cylinders. EPA city/highway mileage is an impressive 19/29 mpg. EPA mileage on the coupe is 16/25 mpg.

Honda also offers a choice of two iVTEC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, rated at 177 hp and 190 hp, respectively. The more powerful engine features a high-flow exhaust system and a reprogrammed engine control module. Both DOHC engines return EPA mileage ratings of 21/31 mpg. Transmissions include five-speed manual and automatic boxes.

There is no Accord Hybrid for model-year 2008.

The automaker says the new Accord sedan has more interior space than a Ford Fusion or Toyota Camry, and has moved up a size into the EPA Large category.

The 2008 Accord goes on sale officially on September 12. Prices will be announced closer to that date.

Kia announced at the 2007 New York Auto Show its intention to produce the Soul concept car, a vehicle expected to compete against the Scion xB. Spy photographers are now offering an early look at the production Soul.

With its distinctive styling, the Soul is expected to appeal to younger buyers with a muscular look on the outside and a high-end audio system on the inside. Powering the Soul will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability.

The 2009 Kia Soul will enter showrooms in late 2008.

Dodge Announces Pricing on 2008 Caliber SRT4

Dodge has announced that its 2008 Caliber SRT4, the first production Caliber to get the Street and Racing Technology treatment, will start at $22,995, including a $560 destination charge. That positions it slightly lower in price than the 2008 VW GTI 2.0T, which starts at $23,370, including a $640 destination charge.

A fully loaded Caliber SRT4 is priced north of $25,000, if you add such goodies as a $1,190 Kicker/SRT Livin' Loud audio system, a $795 power sunroof and $400 19-inch polished aluminum SRT wheels. Another key option is bound to be the Reconfigurable Display, which features "performance pages" that show lateral and longitudinal G-force, 1/8-mile and 1/4-mile acceleration time and speed, 0-60-mph time and braking distance.

The Caliber SRT4 is powered by a 2.4-liter DOHC inline-4 that churns out 285 horses and 265 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a Getrag six-speed manual transmission. The Caliber SRT4's suspension is lowered by 28mm in the front and 22mm in the rear.

Standard features include a unique hood with functional air scoop, four-wheel antilock brakes with vented front brake rotors, stability control, air-conditioning, a 12-volt power outlet and a center-mounted tachometer. The cabin gets sport seating with "performance bolsters."

The exterior palette includes brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red. There's no word yet on the on-sale date.

Question of Warranty: 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R, Second Buyer Beware

It's one of the most sought-after cars in the world, and it hasn't even gone into production yet. The 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R already has a lengthy waiting list, but if the lucky first-round buyers are intending to buy and sell quickly for a profit, they might want to think twice.

According to Jan Thompson, Nissan's vice president of marketing, in an effort to prevent buyers from selling their dealer-purchased Skyline GT-R immediately for a profit, Nissan is considering voiding the Skyline's warranty for the second buyer if the transaction takes place less than one year after the initial purchase.

"That's the route we're looking at," said Scott Vazin, Nissan's director of product public relations. "A warranty decision will be made before the Tokyo auto show."

Voiding the warranty for the second owner is one way for the Japanese automaker to keep the GT-R's price down near the expected $70,000 MSRP.

The near 450-horsepower Skyline GT-R makes its official debut at the upcoming 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. Also, after much internal debate, Nissan has confirmed that the car will be presented in silver, and not the alternate choice of red.

New Car Review : Frankfurt Preview: Kia Proceeds With Three-Door Pro-cee'd

The third body style of the Slovakian-built Kia cee'd will make its debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show next month. The three-door Pro-cee'd will be longer, lower and sportier than its five-door sibling.

Though Kia's Slovakian production plant was officially inaugurated in April, it has been producing the cee'd hatchback since December 2006. Demand is sky-high for the subcompact hatch, so it is no wonder that its wagon version was launched earlier than originally planned. Now the three-door version will fill out the lineup.

The production version kept much of the styling of the concept, which was shown last year at the 2006 Paris Auto Show. It looks more dynamic than the five-door cee'd, courtesy of a 30mm-lower height and a slightly extended length. The nose gets an added 10mm, and there are other new touches such as a new grille, altered headlights, wider bumpers and larger foglights.

The engine lineup will match that of other cee'd family members, so choices will include five Euro-4 compliant engines, two common-rail diesels and three four-cylinder gas units with power output ranging from 90 to 143 horsepower. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered.

To mark the sportiness of the car, there'll be an optional Sports Pack with 17-inch alloys, stiffer springs and an enhanced interior including alloy pedals, tire-track pattern fabric upholstery and stainless steel scuff plates.

The 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show will be the coming-out party for Peugeot's extended 308 family, including the sexy 308RCZ and a wagon concept called the 308SW Prologue.

Although billed as a concept, the SW Prologue looks pretty close to the actual production model that is slated to go on sale across Europe in spring 2008.

Engines are expected to include normally aspirated and turbocharged gas and diesel four-cylinder units, ranging from 110 to 150 horsepower.

Automotive News : Nissan Rolls Out Fuel-Efficiency Gauge To Boost "Eco Driving"

As part of its ongoing effort to get drivers to think green behind the wheel, Nissan on Tuesday said it is rolling out a fuel-efficiency gauge as a standard feature on such current models as the Altima and Infiniti G35 in the U.S. The company predicts it could "lead to an average 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency."

The device eventually will be featured on all future new models, the company said.

The gauge gives instant fuel-efficiency and average efficiency readings. "By accelerating, the driver would instantly see an increase in fuel consumption reflected on the gauge," the company said in a statement. "Based on Nissan's trials, drivers have tended to improve their eco-driving habits over time, prompted by the real-time fuel-efficiency readings."

The device will also be installed on current models of the Nissan Skyline, Lafesta and Atlas in Japan. Of course, Nissan warns that results "may vary based on individual driving style."

New Car Review : Lamborghini Supercar Coming

The Internet chat forums are buzzing with news about a $1.6 million Lamborghini flagship reportedly going on display next month at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Underscoring the high-octane occasion will be its unveiling by German supermodel Nadine Gerhardt.

Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann showed a scale model and a video to selected dealers and VIP customers at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance last weekend. Details are sketchy, but word is that the car's styling was inspired by Lockheed Martin's latest F22 Raptor fighter jet, including its gray paint job and fancy instrument panel.

Several reports claim that only 20 will be built and all of them have already been sold. Potential buyers reportedly handed over $300,000 deposits for the privilege.

Lamborghini is on a roll: It sold 1,239 cars during the first six months of 2007, an increase of more than 30 percent compared with the same period last year. The Italian company is also hugely profitable, making its owner, Volkswagen, fairly happy.

Green is looking like gold for Opel at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show. The GM brand said on Wednesday it will showcase the world premiere of the Opel Corsa Hybrid concept there in September, along with the Opel Vectra Flexpower. Both vehicles "show potential" for presumably seeing the light of day as production vehicles, Opel said.

The Corsa Hybrid uses the 75-horsepower Corsa 1.3 CDTI and GM's next-generation belt-alternator starter technology, which makes its debut on the concept. It also uses a lithium-ion battery. Opel says the concept "requires just 3.75 liters of diesel per 100 km and emits only 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer."

The Opel Vectra Flexpower with a 2.0-liter turbo engine is designed to use a bioethanol/gas mix. The Vectra Flexpower's 2.0t engine makes 175 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm.

Opel said its ecoFlex lineup in Frankfurt will get special design touches, such as "green spirit" exterior paint. The cabins will be outfitted with green stitching on the leather steering wheel and other spots, just to drive the green point home further

Canadian George Parker, a self-described inventor, has toned down a few of his claims since first issuing a press release in March 2006 on a vehicle he called the CV-3000.

The original plan was to build a limited run of the tandem-seated three-wheelers and sell them for $47,500 to $97,500, with the first deliveries slated to begin in the summer of 2006.

According to that early press release, the CV-3000 would be powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine fitted with the company's "gasoline fuel vapor fuel management system." The engine would be mated to a continuously variable transmission, offer 180 horsepower and would zip from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with projected fuel economy of 100-150 mpg.

Too good to be true? Apparently.

Rechristened the Alé (pronounced uh-LAY) for its public debut at last fall's SEMA show, the fiberglass-bodied trike was fitted with a Honda engine, and the original heady projections were scaled back to zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and 92 mpg with a more conventional five-speed manual gearbox. Top speed is electronically limited to 140 mph.

The hype continues, however, from Parker's Fuel Vapor Technologies, which in its latest release says it is looking for investors to help put the vehicle into production.

The configuration, although unusual, looks deceptively simple. The two front wheels drive and steer the vehicle. The secret, according to the company, is the fuel management system, a "patent-pending process [that] allows the engine to run on 'fuel vapors' rather than liquid fuel."

Fuel Vapor Technologies says it still intends to enter the Alé in the Automotive X Prize competition for world's most efficient production vehicle. There's only one catch: The Alé is still not in production, which Parker now hopes to commence in 2008.

he LoJack Corporation sent out details of a late-July theft of a Lamborghini Gallardo in Italy by burglars who "used sleeping gas to subdue the victim." The thieves — whom LoJack describes as two Albanians — broke into a vacation home on the Eastern Coast of Italy, knocked out the victim with the gas, and then stole the keys to the Lambo. "Through the LoJack System, Italian police located the vehicle en route on a highway leading from Rome to Naples," the company said in a statement. "Italian State Patrol vehicles seized the vehicle and arrested two thieves, who were from Albania."

The vehicle had been purchased in France, the company said. LoJack used the episode to illustrate its capability to work across the borders of countries, including its European network, as well as a recent U.S./Mexico agreement. The company called its efforts "fighting crime on a global scale." LoJack uses radio frequency technology to help track vehicles.

Car Review : 2008 Volvo S40/V50

Volvo's entry level S40 sedan has led the last two full-line Volvo makeovers, each of which has met with critical acclaim. Despite the fact that the S40 and its V50 wagon sibling were last redesigned in late 2003 and are both still looking great, like vain Hollywood 30-somethings they've gone under the knife for a nip-tuck anyway. It's nothing overly serious, just a retool of the soft parts on either end, but the result is striking and serves to heighten the resemblance of the S40 to the new flagship S80, and the V50 to its V70 sibling, which is thoroughly renewed for 2008.

Specifically, the S40's face gets new headlamps, a deeper-set chrome-ringed grille with a larger Volvo emblem, and a single lower air intake spanning the width of the chin. The V40 retains its three lower air intakes to emphasize a strong vertical element and gets a prominent black egg-crate grille like the V70's in front. New taillamps and a fascia with new exhaust outlets freshen the rear of both models. An R-design sport-appearance package will become available soon on both the S40 and V50 (also the C70), consisting of lowered front and rear spoilers and side sills, a modest rear wing, and more.

Both models' interiors are freshened to offer more storage space in the doors and the center console, which now includes two cubbies thanks to a new, more space-efficient handbrake design. The trademark slim, freestanding center stack that holds the radio and climate controls can now be finished in Scandinavian oak plywood, to resemble a bent-wood chair (the veneer face is oak, the plywood plies are a resin material-they can't actually bend plywood that thick and use it for a dash, as it would splinter in an accident).

Speaking of safety, the BLindspot Information System (BLIS) is a new stand-alone option ($695), tire-pressure monitoring is standard, and the hazard lights are now programmed to come on automatically in any accident that triggers the airbags. Self-steering bi-Xenon headlamps are new options for the top T5 models ($800).
The range-topping turbocharged T5 variants of each get nine more horsepower, for a total of 227, and that's about all that changes under the skin. We took a test drive in the new S40 T5, and we have to say that the four percent boost in power is less easy to feel through the seat of the pants than is the torque steer through the wheel rim-at least on our front-drive tester. It's not at all unruly-one needn't establish a death grip on the wheel before lowering the hammer, but the effort goes unnaturally light at launch and when the Geartronic transmission upshifts to second under full throttle, especially when the car isn't heading straight ahead. It's a subtle reminder that this entry-luxmobile shares DNA with the Ford Focus and Mazda3 compacts.

The S40 and V50 may not sell themselves to enthusiast drivers based solely on the way they carve corners and dust the quarter mile; but neither should their dynamics deter the hip, IKEA-loyal, young prospective buyers lured by their now even better-looking exterior styling and unmistakably Scandinavian interiors.

Ford’s first Five Hundred attempt misjudged the marketplace by assuming that advanced transmissions, unique seating and available all-wheel-drive would trump the desire for raw engine power and sophisticated, cutting-edge styling. Making just 203 horses, the old engine always felt as if it was catching up via the expansive transmission ratios. The addition of 57 horsepower under the hood of the 2008 Ford Taurus will be a welcome improvement, as will the new sheetmetal and styling characteristics along with standard side and curtain rollover airbags. With a 5-star safety Gold Award from IIHS, the Taurus now looks and acts the part as a Ford flagship sedan.

The 2008 Ford Taurus is very significant to Ford’s current and future success. Every new Ford product is essential to its North American “Way Forward” turnaround plan. During the heyday of the original Taurus, Ford had the best-selling family sedan in the United States. But Japanese competition marginalized the Taurus, which ceased production in the fall of 2006. It is the job of this new version, along with the smaller Fusion, to regain the sales volumes of the once-iconic Taurus.

An improved powertrain motivates the 2008 Ford Taurus. Its new 3.5-liter Duratec V6 engine yields 260 horsepower, a substantial improvement compared with the previous 3.0-liter V6’s output of 203 hp. A new six-speed automatic transmission has been tailored for efficiency, and the Taurus achieves a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) rating in states that follow California’s strict emissions guidelines, the first V6 to earn the PZEV rating. The CVT has been dropped. Ford has also revised the Taurus's front shock towers, allowing for 10 mm more travel. New front springs and dampers combine with an upgraded rear suspension for a more luxurious ride. Fuel Efficient Power Steering (FEPS) varies power steering boost, maximizing effectiveness and economy.

The new 2008 Ford Taurus reflects updated styling sensibilities seen – and celebrated – in the smaller Ford Fusion. The Taurus receives entirely new sheetmetal from the windshield forward. The highlight is Ford’s three-bar chrome grille that aligns with new headlights that define the front fascia’s crisp and modern appearance. New smaller and lower-mounted side mirrors improve visibility while reducing wind noise. Revised rear styling includes new, attractive taillights. Inside, a new 2-tier clamshell console brings creative stowage. Limited models are accented in chrome throughout, including on the door handles, side vents and license plate décor strip.

A tall, “Command Seating” stance makes entry and egress on the 2008 Ford Taurus SUV-like and also aids down-the-road visibility. Inside, the front passenger seat folds flat and the rear seats split 60/40 for creative stowage solutions of items up to 9 ft. long or just gobs of gear. Ford says the Taurus has best-in-class front and rear leg room, and noise levels in the spacious interior are reduced 5 percent, easing conversation and adding relaxation to the drive. The new, two-tier center console has hide-away storage in the lower compartment. A new steering wheel design moves the front airbag further away from the driver to help reduce unnecessary injury.

Ford says the 2008 Ford Taurus blends the Five Hundred's existing positive traits with improvements in the areas where it was most needed. Ford boasts that it still has the most expansive interior in its class, with impressive front and rear leg room and standard safety features, a 60/40 folding rear seat and a fold-flat front seat. “(Taurus) has a strong reputation for safety, quality and comfort,” said Cisco Codina, group vice president of North American Marketing, Sales and Service. “With a more distinct look, new features and a completely new powertrain, the (Taurus) will be even more appealing.”

Rumblings that Citroen would be unveiling a new cabrio concept at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show have been confirmed after a series of images leaked out from a Citroen-specific forum. The pictures of the C-Airscape look authentic enough, with a highly stylized front clip, expansive windshield and what we're assuming is a soft-top tucked beneath a toneau cover. We're particularly partial to the swage-line that incorporates the door handles into one elongated piece of chrome.

The cabrio version will likely foretell the future of the C5 sedan, which is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

MINI will unveil a new track-only car at Frankfurt: the John Cooper Works CHALLENGE. The race-ready hatch incorporates extensive revisions to the engine and suspension to ensure that it is essentially maxed-out in all areas of performance. New pistons, a reworked turbocharger, new intake and exhaust plumbing and a reprogrammed engine management system highlight the underhood mods. Power is channeled up front via a six-speed manual. The chassis is upgraded with a race suspension, and new four-piston brakes hide behind the Dunlop-shod Borbet wheels.
The entire package is wrapped in a John Cooper Works aero kit that features an adjustable rear spoiler, a rear diffuser, and a new front spoiler. Since the car is intended to be raced, a full roll cage is welded in, the stock front seats are replaced by Recaro buckets with six-point harnesses, and a HANS device is also included. The car is basically a ready-to-rock package for racing teams participating in the MINI Challenge series held in certain markets. For those not inclined to participate in the series, however, it looks like a very entertaining track-day bomber. The price is set at €49,900 including VAT. The order form goes online on September 11, 2007, and racing teams will begin taking delivery of the cars in March of next year. Private buyers will have their orders filled starting next June. Car Review : Chrysler Rolls Out 2008 PT Street Cruiser Sunset Boulevard Edition

Chrysler said it is kicking off Woodward Dream Cruise festivities this week with the rollout of its latest limited-edition model, the 2008 PT Street Cruiser Sunset Boulevard Edition. The car will go on sale later this summer starting at $16,650 for the manual-transmission model and $17,475 for the automatic-transmission model. Both prices include a $640 destination charge.

Chrysler notes that this is the 11th customized version of the PT Cruiser since the car's introduction in 2000. The latest model is spun off the 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser LX.

Details include special Sunset Crystal paint, 16-inch chrome-clad nine-spoke wheels with all-season tires, a power moonroof and deep-tint sunscreen glass. Street Cruiser badging decorates the rear liftgate. Interior touches include Pastel Pebble Beige sport bucket seats, bright sill scuff pads and bright accent ring cupholders.

The Sunset Boulevard Edition joins such special models as the Flames, Woodie and Street Cruiser Route 66. Sunset Boulevard is an iconic thoroughfare in popular culture. It was the setting for the 1960s TV series 77 Sunset Strip and served as the inspiration for the 1950 movie of the same name, as well as the 1993 Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that starred Glenn Close as Norma Desmond.

European consumers will get a chance next spring to buy a new hatchback version of the Korean-engineered Chevrolet Aveo sedan that's been on sale for the past year in North America. Both models are variants of the Daewoo Gentra, made by General Motors' Korean affiliate and sold around the world under various brand names, including Chevy, Pontiac and Holden.

The European Aveo gets an aggressive new face, with overall styling cues inspired by the WTCC Ultra concept that was unveiled last fall at the Paris show. The Aveo hatchback will be formally introduced next month at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

It is unclear if the new Aveo hatchback will join the Aveo sedan in North America. Currently, Chevrolet sells an older version of the hatchback, badged Aveo 5, as its entry-level model in the U.S., with prices starting from $10,560.

In Europe, the car will offer a choice of an 84-horsepower 1.2-liter or a 98-hp 1.4-liter engine.

The centerpiece of Saab's Frankfurt auto show exhibit will be the limited-edition Turbo X, a variant of the 9-3 that harks back to the Saab 99 and 900 "Black Turbos."

Saab is being as mysterious about the Turbo X as the name would suggest. It has yet to offer detailed specifications or discuss what it calls the "innovative features" of the "new Saab 'Black Turbo.'"

"This ultimate expression of the new 9-3 range will deliver standard-setting levels of performance for the brand," Saab said in a statement on Friday.

The Turbo X celebrates the 30th anniversary of the debut of Saab's first turbocharged model, which was unveiled in Frankfurt in 1977. The 99 Turbo has been described by Saab as "one of the most emblematic cars in Saab's history." The launch car was finished in Pearl White and is part of the Saab AB factory collection in Trollhättan, Sweden.

The original four-cylinder 2.0-liter Turbo engine delivered 135 horsepower, compared with 115 for the standard engine. However, torque was bumped up dramatically. Saab said it was the first to offer a turbo tuned for low-speed torque in a sedan for daily driving, as opposed to "high-speed power in a pure sports car such as the Porsche 911," according to the book Saab 60th Anniversary Edition. A four-speed manual transmission was standard.

A total of 10,607 Saab 99 Turbo vehicles were built, starting with 100 test fleet cars in 1977 and continuing through 1982. The 99 Turbo three-door hatchback was sold in the U.S. only during the 1978 model year. It was replaced by the larger Saab 900 Turbo three- and five-door hatchback in 1979.

We told you earlier this week about the new Suzuki Kizashi concept sedan that is to be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show next month. Now the company has released a teaser drawing, as well as the first official photo of its new Splash compact, which also makes its debut at the fall show.

The Splash joins the Swift and the SX4 in the company's growing portfolio of global products. It will go on sale next spring in Europe, with a choice of three- and four-cylinder gas and diesel engines.

The Kizashi concept provides strong clues as to the future midsize sedan that Suzuki plans to launch in early 2009 in North America and other global markets.

To be built in Japan, the new four-door is a larger companion to the SX4 sedan. It will be joined by a new midsize wagon and is expected to replace the Korea-built Forenza.

Suzuki also plans to reveal more news on its latest World Rally Championship effort, including a close-up look at the SX4 WRC rally car that makes its maiden voyage in mid-October at the Rallye de France in Corsica.

Porsche Cars North America will put the first of 500 Limited Edition Boxster and Boxster S models on sale on September 28, priced at $49,900 and $59,900, respectively.

The orange Limited Edition cars were first previewed earlier this year at the 2007 New York Auto Show. Features include a sport exhaust system, safety bars and a Limited Edition plaque in the glovebox. A Sport Design package bundles front spoiler lips, a redesigned rear spoiler and a modified rear fascia with integrated diffuser.

Contrasting with the orange paint scheme are black painted alloy wheels (18-inch on the Boxster, 19-inch on the Boxster S), black side mirrors, black front and side air intakes, and a black convertible top. Inside, the seats, carpet, dash, door panels and other surfaces are trimmed in black and orange.

Renault plans to storm the Frankfurt Messe with no fewer than seven world premieres at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show next month. Among them: the first-ever wagon version of the Clio supermini. Also due to be unveiled are hatchback and wagon editions of the new Laguna, plus two new concepts.

The Clio wagon was inspired by the Clio Grand Tour concept that was displayed earlier this year at Geneva. The production model will be called Clio Sport Tourer in the U.K. and Clio Estate on the Continent when it goes on sale late this year.

Proton's Chinese Partner To Assemble Lotus Sports Cars

A small Chinese manufacturer, Jinhua Neoplan, has extended its agreement with Malaysian automaker Proton and now plans to begin assembling Lotus sports cars by year's end.

The China Daily reports that Jinhua Neoplan, an affiliate of Zhejiang-based automaker Jinhua Youngman, expects to build up to 150,000 cars a year at its plant in Jinan. Among the cars it plans to assemble is the Lotus Europa, from knocked-down kits.

Lotus last year said it had an engineering contract with Jinhua Youngman to develop a four-door sedan for the Chinese market. That vehicle is a version of the Proton Gen 2, which will be rebadged as the Europestar in China. Lotus, which is owned by Proton, collaborated on a hybrid gas-electric version of the Gen 2 sedan.

Jinhua also has partnered previously with Iran Khodro on minicar production.

Portugal has never been any kind of hub of automotive industry. This did not stop Jose Miguel Conceiçao Rodrigues, a Portuguese businessman who runs a classic-car dealership here. He embarked on an ambitious path to come up with a home-breed sports car named the Vinci GT that has reached the prototype and mock-up stage.

Rodrigues teamed with the nonprofit Center for Excellence and Innovation in the Auto Industry (CEIIA). Together they started the Retrosport company to draw up the design. The Vinci GT was penned by Ernesto Freitas, a designer whose portfolio also includes the Dutch Hansen GT-R sports car.

The look of the prototype is very '60s. Power comes from a 6.0-liter Chevrolet V8 capable of 475 horsepower, mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. Most of the components were produced locally. Retrosport hopes to launch production in January 2008 of a total of 100 cars, each costing the equivalent of $341,000.

Meanwhile, the company has mocked up a second model, the transverse midengine Vinci Sport, which appears like nothing so much as a modernized Ferrari Dino. Further plans for this design have not yet been announced.

Subaru's Japanese parent, Fuji Heavy Industries, has announced that its Frankfurt show stand will be anchored by the new WRC Concept.

The company declined to divulge any details on the car, other than some PR speak that the concept "conjures up images of future styling trends for a world rally car."

From that, we can conclude that the concept offers a glimpse of both the next-generation World Rally Championship car and the successor to the WRX STI, which is expected to break cover later this fall at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show.

Also on display in Frankfurt will be the redesigned Impreza as well as the reincarnated Justy minicar, which is being licensed from Daihatsu.

After months of negotiations, Fiat Auto and Chery Automobile have officially established a joint venture to assemble cars for both companies at a new factory here, beginning in 2009. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 175,000 and will assemble such vehicles as the Alfa Romeo 159 and 147 sedans, as well as some Fiat and Chery models, primarily for the China market.

Earlier, Chery signed an agreement to supply Fiat with up to 100,000 engines a year. The 1.6- and 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines will be used in Fiat cars assembled in China and other countries. Fiat still maintains a modest joint venture with another Chinese firm, Nanjing Auto, which is in the midst of merger talks with larger Shanghai Auto. That venture last year built about 45,000 Fiat Palio, Perla and Siena compacts.

Chery, meanwhile, has agreed to supply cars to Chrysler for sale in markets outside China, including North America, under the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands.

The Fiat/Chery venture will mark the first assembly deal for Alfa in China.

"Entering the Chinese market at this stage is a key milestone in our plan to revamp and expand the Alfa Romeo business worldwide," said Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer of Fiat Auto. "The cooperation with Chery will also further development of the Fiat brand in China."

Fiat executives in recent weeks have said the company plans to spend more than $2 billion in China and expects to boost annual vehicle sales there to more than 250,000 by 2010.

The 2008 Harley F-150 comes as a SuperCrew 4x2 or AWD. Exterior paint schemes include monochromatic black with a custom beltline stripe or two-tone black and vintage copper.

Other features include 22-inch polished forged aluminum wheels, chrome dual exhaust tips, blacked-out headlamps, chrome billet grille and lower front valance, body-color bumpers and door handles, brushed stainless steel pedals, two-tone leather interior trim and piano black accents.

GM Developing Lithium-Ion Battery for Chevrolet Volt

General Motors has joined with battery specialist A123Systems to develop a new lithium-ion battery for use in the Chevrolet Volt and other future GM plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles. Meanwhile, Toyota reportedly has delayed by one to two years the planned introduction of lithium-ion batteries in the next-generation Prius and other hybrid models because of safety concerns, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, in announcing the alliance with Massachusetts-based A123Systems, said, "Breakthrough battery technology will drive future automotive propulsion, and the company that aligns with the best strategic partners will win." A123Systems says its nanophosphate-based cell technology provides higher power output, longer life and safer operations over the life of the battery than other lithium-ion battery chemistries. Makers of laptop computers have been forced to recall thousands of their products because of overheating and exploding lithium-ion batteries, raising safety issues about their use in other products, such as hybrid vehicles.

In one of the few bits of true product news to come out of this week's Center of Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars here, Hyundai announced that its Elantra variant, a tall wagon dubbed "Elantra Touring," will make its debut in spring 2008 as a 2009 model. The five-door Elantra Touring will be a sister vehicle to the Elantra sedan. The Elantra Touring is expected to be priced under $15,000; the 2007 Elantra GLS starts at $13,995, including a $600 destination charge. The previous-generation Elantra included a five-door model.

Hyundai said the Elantra Touring will use the same 2.0-liter inline-4 found in the Elantra sedan. The engine makes 138 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. It is linked to a standard five-speed manual transmission. The Korean automaker said the Elantra Touring will be tweaked with a "unique sport suspension and steering tuned for greater response and handling." It will also offer the company's first USB port, along with a standard auxiliary jack and standard XM Satellite Radio.

Volkswagen has decided to return to its own TDI branding for diesel vehicles, rather than bringing out its own Bluetec-equipped cars here in 2008. The German magazine Wirtschaftswoche said VW is abandoning the diesel alliance because the Bluetec brand is too closely linked with rival Mercedes-Benz.

TDI has been used on diesel-engined VWs for many years. "We already have 800,000 diesel vehicles running in the U.S.; for that reason we want to go ahead with our TDI brand," VW spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode told Thompson Financial.

Last fall, BMW AG decided not to join the alliance, preferring to launch its own clean-diesel vehicles in the U.S. next year. It is expected that Chrysler vehicles with diesel engines co-developed with DaimlerChrysler will still use Bluetec badging in the near future.

German tuner Kicherer has spent much of its history reworking various products in the Mercedes-Benz family, with a little help from AMG and Brabus. Now it has switched its focus to the upper end of the Audi range, with a new edition of the R8.

Kicherer has done little more than tweak the R8's already exceptional performance. It fitted a set of H&R springs that lower ride height by 1.2 inches in the rear and 0.6 inch in front. Then it added 20-inch three-piece forged aluminum wheels shod with ultralow-profile Michelin performance tires.

The modest aero body pieces, developed in the wind tunnel, include a rear wing and a front spoiler, both of which provide additional downforce at high speeds.

Spy photographers have already glimpsed a heavily disguised 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class during hot-weather testing in the U.S., and now they're offering a sneak peek illustration based on the prototypes.

It's still several years off, but the redesigned E-Class has been in the works for some time now. Various test mules have revealed subtle changes that should give this midsize luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz a more dramatic look than the current model.

Up front, the headlights will change from their current oval shape in favor of a squared-off look. It's bound to be one of this sedan's more noticeable changes as the rest of the new design will incorporate subtle variations that are harder to spot. Minor changes to the current beltline and shape of the greenhouse should further distance this sedan from its predecessor. Revised taillights should give it a new look from behind, too, but we couldn't verify the shapes used in this illustration so we'll have to wait to see how accurate the artist's conception is when the car sheds more of its camouflage.

Fiat's Turkish affiliate Tofas is in the final stages of testing a new compact delivery vehicle/people mover that's expected to go on sale next spring in European markets.

The passenger version of the Panda-based people mover may be called the Fiat Fiorino, according to Italiaspeed.com, which ran unofficial photos of an engineering prototype.

The small van is being jointly developed with PSA Peugeot Citroën under the code name Minicargo and will be marketed as a smaller, less expensive companion to the Fiat Doblo. Eventually, it could be built and sold in various markets around the world, including China, India and Latin America.

Equipped with a choice of four-cylinder gas and diesel engines, the Fiorino will compete with the next-generation Renault Kangoo, which is scheduled to reach European dealers in late spring.

What this means to you: European carmakers continue to introduce innovative small vehicles that might eventually find a second home in North America if fuel prices continue to rise.

The folks at B&B think they know best. Starting from the ground up, they've fitted 20-inch rims with 235/30R20 tires in front and 305/25R20s in the rear.

New performance springs lower ride height by 0.8 inch in front and 0.4 inch in the rear. B&B says it is working on additional height-adjustable suspension settings.

The tuner also provides two stages of engine upgrades, with the top upgrade boosting output of the midmounted 4.2-liter V8 from 414 to 450 horsepower while trimming 0-60-mph acceleration times by 0.3 second.

Honda has announced that its Honda FCX hydrogen fuel cell car is the first to meet government requirements and get a whopping $12,000 tax credit. The credit is part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that was passed to help encourage development of green vehicles and other energy-saving technology.

The Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit will be available to buyers of the vehicle, although it is not yet available for sale to the public. American Honda fuel cell Marketing Manager Stephen Ellis commented that the tax credit is "further validation that the FCX is a real vehicle" and called it "another step toward market viability."

The four-seat vehicle, which emits only water vapor, has been out on public roads since 2002, with 15 in use in California cities and by the state government of New York, including two leased to individuals. It was displayed to the public at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show last November.

Mazda is rolling out a limited edition of the RX-8 in the home market to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Mazda rotary engine.The engine itself predates Mazda, originating with Felix Wankel, who built the first running prototype at German automaker NSU in 1957.

Mazda's first rotary-engine car, the Cosmo Sport, was launched in Japan in 1967. The company installed the rotary in several other models, notably the RX-7 (known in Japan as the Savanna). Poor fuel economy and higher-than-average exhaust emissions nearly killed the engine in North America. But Mazda in recent years has continued to refine the basic design and now is working on such exotic variants as a hydrogen-powered rotary.

The RX-8 Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary model features black leather and light silver Alcantara seats, marble white exterior paint, plus additional equipment, including Bilstein shocks and 18-inch wheels and tires. Buyers can choose between six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Only 200 units will be produced. The price in Japan is $26,500.

Chrysler Celebrates New Ownership By Giving Away Vehicles

As part of the festivities to celebrate its new ownership, Chrysler said on Wednesday it will be giving away vehicles — excluding plums like the Dodge Viper — at participating Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers in the U.S. on August 15.

The automaker said 15 different vehicles will be given away from the 2007-'08 model years, including the Chrysler Aspen, Crossfire, 300C and Pacifica; Dodge Caliber, Charger, Dakota Crew Cab, Durango, Magnum, Nitro and Ram Mega Cab; and Jeep Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee and Liberty.

Calling it "the ultimate door prize," the automaker said it will give away 15 vehicles in total. Entrants must be licensed drivers over 18 and residents of the U.S.

Nissan has announced that its 2008 Altima 2.5 sedan will start at $18,855, including a $625 destination charge, reflecting a fairly modest $280 price increase. The top-of-the-line 2008 Altima 3.5 SL starts at $28,905, including shipping. Nissan is also considering adding features to the 2008 Altima Hybrid, which may result in a price increase of about $100, according to Nissan spokesman Darryll Harrison. "We are looking at adding some features that aren't standard," he said. "It may be just a slight increase [in price]." Altima Hybrid pricing is expected to be announced later this summer. The 2007 Altima Hybrid starts at $25,615, including shipping.

The 2008 Altima coupe's pricing was announced in the spring. It starts at $21,115, including shipping.

For 2008, Nissan adds standard antilock brakes to the Altima sedan and optional XM Satellite Radio. Options for 2008 include a $6,200 technology package for the 3.5 SE model and a $900 package that bundles vehicle dynamic control (stability control) and a full-size spare. A rear spoiler adds another $370 to the bottom line.

Third-row seats in SUVs are a hot commodity for growing families, and thieves are catching on to their popularity as well. Local law enforcement agencies are now devising ways to get the best of burglars looking to boost the heavy, expensive optional seats like those found in the Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe's removable rear 50/50-split bench does not fold into the floor like the rear seat in the Toyota Highlander, but instead needs to be removed from the SUV for storage. These seats are not marked with serial numbers, and if stolen, it's impossible to track them back to the original vehicle.

"Seat theft has become a real problem over the last several months," said Officer David Stennick of the Long Beach, California police department. "Thieves aren't just stealing seats stored in private garages. They're breaking into parked SUVs and grabbing third-row seats in the middle of the day." According to investigators, the seats are very easy to reinstall in any similar SUV. The thief just has to tighten two bolts. The near-universal nature of the GM seats makes them a prime target. As a result, GM seats are showing up for sale at swap meets and other cash-exchange businesses.

Although the removable cloth third-row seat in a 2007 Tahoe LS is only a $460 factory option, the retail price for replacing the seat can be in the thousands of dollars. The fold-down seat in the 2007 Highlander adds $850 to the SUV's base MSRP.

Following a rash of thefts in local neighborhoods, the Long Beach Police Department is now offering to engrave vehicle identification numbers under rear seats for free. Officers are marking the seats in several areas to prevent thieves from merely scratching off the ID number.

Although Audi has not yet confirmed production of the R8 spider, the Internet is flooded with talk of its eventual arrival. It's hardly a stretch as the R8's natural rival, the Porsche 911, derives a good chunk of its sales from its convertible models.

Nissan appears to be ramping up its commitment to diesel technology based on two significant announcements here on Monday. The Japanese automaker said it will launch a new clean diesel for use in the X-Trail in Japan in the fall of 2008. In addition, Nissan said a new clean diesel technology shows "great promise" and may be able to meet California's standard for super-ultralow-emissions vehicles, one of the toughest in the world. The details of the clean diesel in the X-Trail, which is not sold in the United States, are fairly sketchy. Nissan said performance and specifications will be released closer to its introduction next year. It said the X-Trail's diesel will be based on the "M9R engine co-developed with Alliance-partner Renault" and will use high-performance catalysts and advanced engine management technologies. "This clean diesel engine is being developed to lower exhaust gas emissions to levels comparable to those of new emissions standards in Japan," it said.

Of perhaps greater importance to U.S. consumers, Nissan also announced that its new clean diesel technology will "be able to achieve cleaner diesel emissions in future vehicles that will meet the stringent SULEV standards set by the state of California." The company's statement says "Nissan plans to do further research and development of the clean diesel technology for commercial application in its future products."

The new technology reduces diesel emissions by using three components: high-performance catalysts, advanced engine control systems and "modulated-kinetic combustion," Nissan said.

Bokich said the A5 will launch with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Formal pricing has not been announced, but it is expected to be priced in the low $40,000s. Audi's first U.S. diesel will be the 3.0 TDI in the Audi Q7 that will launch in late 2008 or early 2009. Bokich said the 3.0 TDI is "very flexible. You could put it in the A4, A5, A6 and A8," he said.

Cadillac said details of the 2008 Escalade Platinum will be released later in the year. The 2008 XLR Platinum Series gets a handcrafted leather interior.

General Motors revealed details of what's to come with the new Pontiac G8 performance sedan this week, saying the lineup will "offer a V6-powered base model and a V8-equipped GT model." The Pontiac G8 is the automaker's first North American application of GM's new global rear-wheel-drive architecture. It will arrive in showrooms in January.

The base G8 will be powered by a 3.6-liter DOHC V6 and deliver 261 horsepower. It is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The G8 GT gets a 6.0-liter small-block V8 rated at 362 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode is standard.
In the meantime, the Pontiac lineup will be headed by two new GXP models, the 2008 Torrent GXP and the 2008 G6 GXP.

The Ford Motor Company's chief executive, Alan Mulally, has been pitching his "One Ford" global strategy to fellow executives as well as the financial community. But what exactly does that mean? For starters, it could bring together all the various permutations of the Ford Focus on a common platform when the next-generation models begin arriving in 2010-'11. Suppliers familiar with Ford's latest battle plan say the company's European operation is developing a future compact-vehicle platform known internally as C2. The new architecture will underpin replacements for the European, American and Chinese versions of the Focus, they say. All could share common designs and sheet metal, although each version will be specifically tailored for the local market.

Currently, the U.S.-built Focus sits on an aging platform known internally as C170, while overseas editions of the Focus are built on the more modern Europe-engineered C1. The C1 platform also provides the base for a number of products from various Ford subsidiaries, including the Mazda 3 and the Volvo C30, C70, S40 and V50.

The redesigned Focus for the U.S. is due in early 2011 and likely will be badged as a 2012 model.

When the newer C2 platform is introduced in global markets, it will also support the next-generation C-Max crossover, which suppliers say will be marketed for the first time in the U.S. in model-year 2012. The tall wagon likely will be built in Mexico and should arrive in U.S. dealerships in the spring of 2011, about the same time as the new Focus sedan.

Ford has a contingency plan to shift the next-generation Escape, also due in model year 2012, to the new C2 platform. While the Mercury Mariner likely will be phased out, there is a provision to add an upscale Lincoln variant of the Escape in 2012 to compete with such premium compact SUVs as the Acura RDX.

Saying that its customers have been begging for a "harder-edged model," Bentley on Wednesday took the wraps off its new 600-horsepower Continental GT Speed. It will be the most expensive variant in the Continental series with an anticipated price tag of around $195,000, including a $2,595 destination charge, Bentley spokesman David Reuter said. A formal pricing announcement is expected closer to the launch date.

The Continental GT Speed goes on sale worldwide in December, but Reuter said Bentley dealers started taking orders for the car today, August 1. When asked if the company expected there to be a waiting list for the Continental GT Speed, he said, "There very well will be. There has been one with every one [special-edition model] we've launched." Bentley expects to sell approximately 200-300 Continental GT Speeds in the U.S. in 2008.

The Continental GT Speed is described as the "most powerful Bentley production car ever." It is equipped with a W12 engine that delivers 9 percent more power than the standard Continental GT and 553 pound-feet of torque, 15 percent more than the standard model. It is the first Bentley to top 200 mph, the company said. It sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. General Motors has yet to announce official pricing on its redesigned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, but GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz gave curious consumers a bit of a heads-up in his latest posting on the GM FastLane blog.

Lutz said he has "two late builds at home for a test drive": a base four-cylinder with a four-speed automatic transmission and a loaded LTZ V6. He said, "Although we haven't announced official pricing, it [the base model] will be around 20 grand." The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu LS starts at $17,865, including a $650 destination charge.

Lutz said the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ V6 will be priced "in the mid-to-upper $20s, again unofficially."

The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ starts at $24,325 with a $650 destination charge. "I was unable to find any hugely discernible difference to cars costing $35,000 or even $45,000," Lutz said. "I may be overstating it [a bit] due to my excitement."

As it prepares to launch its new 308 compact range across Europe, Peugeot has lifted the covers on a 308-based concept for the Frankfurt auto show that suggests the French automaker may be considering a potential competitor to the Audi TT.

Called 308RC Z, the 2+2 coupe shares many of its mechanical underpinnings with the new 308 hatchbacks that begin reaching European dealerships in August.

The design of the sporty two-door appears to be nearly production-ready, although it is not clear if Peugeot would build the vehicle as a fixed-roof coupe or a coupe/convertible with retractable hardtop.

Powering the 308RC X is a high-output version of the twin-cam, direct-injection four-cylinder gas engine that was jointly developed with PSA and BMW. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine now makes 218 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a newly designed six-speed manual gearbox.

Peugeot says the 308RC Z will sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than 7.0 seconds and will reach a top speed of 146 mph — yet will return an impressive 35 mpg in combined city/highway driving.

The car rides on Michelin Pilot Sport tires (245/40R19) mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels.

Peugeot has kept the weight low by using a carbon-fiber roof panel, polycarbonate rear glass, and LED taillamps, among other lightweight body parts.

Long rumored, the partnership between Shanghai Auto, China's largest car company, and the struggling Nanjing Auto was formally announced over the weekend. The companies, both of which are controlled by their respective local governments, said they are exploring ways of forming a "complete union" through restructuring and cooperation.

The impact on the recently revived MG brand and product range, now controlled by Nanjing Auto, won't be felt immediately. But an alliance with powerful Shanghai Auto, which has joint ventures with Volkswagen and General Motors, would certainly enhance MG's long-range prospects. During the 2005 breakup of Britain's MG Rover group, Shanghai Auto secured intellectual property rights to the Rover 75 sedan and other vehicles, while Nanjing Auto acquired the tooling from the shuttered Longbridge factory.

Since then, Nanjing has relaunched production of the MG TF roadster, while both companies have introduced their own re-engineered versions of the Rover 75. Neither company has the rights to the Rover name, so the Shanghai Auto model is badged as the Roewe 750, and the Nanjing Auto version is called the MG 7.

In addition, Nanjing recently signed an agreement with the family of Donald Healey that could see the resurrection of the Austin-Healey nameplate on future sports cars.
