Al Gore's Son Free on Bail After 100-MPH Ride in Toyota Prius

Former Vice President Al Gore's son was arrested and accused of drug possession after being stopped by police here for driving 100 mph in his Toyota Prius hybrid.

Al Gore III, a 24-year-old Harvard graduate, is said to be getting treatment following his arrest on suspicion of drug possession on July 4, according to media reports. He was driving south on the San Diego Freeway in a Prius when authorities stopped him.

His father's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, is an Academy Award-winning documentary about global warming. The arrest comes just days before Al Gore hosts an international concert to combat global warming.

Police found prescription drugs in the car, but Gore did not have a prescription for any of them. Police said a small amount of marijuana was found in the car, too. Gore was not charged with driving under the influence because an expert determined he was not impaired.

In 1989, Gore III was the victim of a near-fatal car accident in Baltimore.

The hybrid system in the Prius kicks out 110 net horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque. It returns 60 mpg in city driving and 51 mpg on the highway.
