Chrysler/Dodge Minivans: Less Money, More Stuff

Chrysler Group announced today it has lowered the prices an average of $2,000 and added standard features to its fifth-generation 2008 minivans that go on sale in September.

The lineup of 2008 Chrysler minivans has been radically simplified. Short-wheelbase models have been dropped, and the Dodge Grand Caravan will be available only in two versions, while the Chrysler Town & Country will come in three versions.

Chrysler claims the new minivans have 35 new or improved features, including three distinct seating and storage systems as well as innovations not offered in other minivans.

A new 4.0 liter V6 engine is offered and it's mated to the first six-speed transmission available in the minivan category. Also featured will be standard side-curtain airbags across all three passenger rows, plus electronic stability control. Other unique features include second-row seats that swivel to the rear; power liftgate; heated rear seats; stain-proof upholstery; a rear backup system; Sirius backseat satellite TV with three family stations; and a power-folding third-row seat.

Models range from the $22,470 Dodge Caravan SE to the $36,400 Chrysler Town & Country Limited.

Steven Landry, Chrysler's executive vice president of sales, says the minivan market will remain relatively stable at roughly 1 million sales per year. He predicts that the segment could surge between now and 2012 as the children of baby boomers begin having families of their own.
