Security Ramped Up for British Grand Prix Amid Terrorism Concerns

Extra security measures will be in effect at the Silverstone race course Sunday, site of the British Grand Prix, because of terrorist incidents earlier in the week in the United Kingdom.

More police officers are scheduled to be on duty at the track and additional closed-circuit television cameras have been installed at the former World War II air base, site of the first race in modern Formula 1 in 1950. Silverstone is located in central England, north of London.

A capacity crowd is anticipated, thanks in large part to the success of rookie Lewis Hamilton, who is leading in the driver standings and has two victories as he comes into his home Grand Prix.

Attempted bombings at Glasgow and London were largely thwarted and did not result in fatalities. Officials deny there has been any specific intelligence that has led to stepped-up security measures for the Silverstone race. Patrols and searches at the track will be increased because the terrorist alert level in the U.K. has been increased to "critical."
