DaimlerChrysler has teamed with tuner Brabus to create several performance editions of the Smart Fortwo.
Priced from $22,280 to $30,307, the hot-rod two-seaters now produce 30 percent more power than their standard siblings, yet return a remarkable 45 mpg.
Brabus focused its initial efforts on the turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that powers the Fortwo and Fortwo Xclusive coupe and cabrio. Output has been boosted to 98 horsepower and torque to 103 pound-feet. With a weight of only 1,700 pounds, the little two-door now sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 9.9 seconds; top speed is governed to 96 mph.
Brabus shoes its Monoblock VI alloy wheels with 175/50R17 tires in front and 225/35R17s at the rear. It also lowers the body by 0.4 inch and adds wider rear wheel arches and a performance exhaust system with stainless steel tailpipes.
The cockpit features Brabus sport pedals, three-spoke steering wheel and instrumentation. The uplevel Xclusive models get projection headlamps, a front spoiler, side skirts and a rear apron, as well as heated leather seats and special instrumentation.
