New Car : Audi Beefs Up A5 Engine Lineup

When the Audi A5 launches in the U.S. in March, it will only be available with the 265-horsepower 3.2 FSI and only in Quattro AWD form, said Audi of America spokesman Chris Bokich. Audi on Monday said it is adding two new engines to the A5: a 2.7 TDI and the 3.2 FSI. They join the 233-hp 3.0 TDI. The 2.7 TDI diesel delivers 190 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque between 1,400 and 3,250 rpm. The diesel hits the 62-mph mark in 7.6 seconds and has a top speed of 144 mph. Neither diesel will be offered in the U.S.-bound A5 as of this time.

The 3.2 FSI gas engine delivers 265 hp and delivers maximum torque of 243 lb-ft. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds. Bokich said the A5 will launch with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Formal pricing has not been announced, but it is expected to be priced in the low $40,000s. Audi's first U.S. diesel will be the 3.0 TDI in the Audi Q7 that will launch in late 2008 or early 2009. Bokich said the 3.0 TDI is "very flexible. You could put it in the A4, A5, A6 and A8," he said.
