Car Review : Chevrolet Aveo

Car Review : Chevrolet Aveo wallpaper pictures

Automotive News

European consumers will get a chance next spring to buy a new hatchback version of the Korean-engineered Chevrolet Aveo sedan that's been on sale for the past year in North America. Both models are variants of the Daewoo Gentra, made by General Motors' Korean affiliate and sold around the world under various brand names, including Chevy, Pontiac and Holden.

The European Aveo gets an aggressive new face, with overall styling cues inspired by the WTCC Ultra concept that was unveiled last fall at the Paris show. The Aveo hatchback will be formally introduced next month at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

It is unclear if the new Aveo hatchback will join the Aveo sedan in North America. Currently, Chevrolet sells an older version of the hatchback, badged Aveo 5, as its entry-level model in the U.S., with prices starting from $10,560.

In Europe, the car will offer a choice of an 84-horsepower 1.2-liter or a 98-hp 1.4-liter engine.

Lutz Hints at Unofficial Price Hike for 2008 Chevy Malibu

Lutz Hints at Unofficial Price Hike for 2008 Chevy Malibu

Chevy Malibu

General Motors has yet to announce official pricing on its redesigned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, but GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz gave curious consumers a bit of a heads-up in his latest posting on the GM FastLane blog.

Lutz said he has "two late builds at home for a test drive": a base four-cylinder with a four-speed automatic transmission and a loaded LTZ V6. He said, "Although we haven't announced official pricing, it [the base model] will be around 20 grand." The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu LS starts at $17,865, including a $650 destination charge.

Lutz said the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ V6 will be priced "in the mid-to-upper $20s, again unofficially."

The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ starts at $24,325 with a $650 destination charge. "I was unable to find any hugely discernible difference to cars costing $35,000 or even $45,000," Lutz said. "I may be overstating it [a bit] due to my excitement."

Lutz said the 2008 Malibu's optional six-speed transmission will be available "shortly after introduction." The '07 Malibu LTZ comes equipped with a 217-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and the '08 Malibu LTZ gets a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6. The new Malibu has a 6-inch-longer wheelbase than the outgoing model and an updated cabin. It goes on sale later this year.

Chevrolet Volt Goes to Washington To Underline GM's Anti-CAFE-Increase Argument

Chevrolet Volt Goes to Washington To Underline GM's Anti-CAFE-Increase Argument
General Motors' North American operations chief, Troy Clarke, is meeting with legislators on Capitol Hill today, and he's bringing along the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid prototype. GM hopes the Volt will help convince lawmakers that electric and alternative-fuel vehicles are the route to energy independence. The Big Three have strenuously opposed a proposed increase in CAFE standards, saying the cost of meeting higher mpg averages would take away resources that could be put toward development of alternative-energy vehicles.

While in Washington, the Volt will also be present at an Electric Power Research Institute meeting on plug-in hybrids, to be held at the National Press Club, the Detroit News reported today.

Earlier this week, about 100 auto dealers visited legislators in Washington, carrying the same message. The proposed increase, already approved by the Senate, would mean cars and light trucks would have to attain an average 35 mpg by 2020. GM has said it would have to spend more than $40 billion to meet that standard.

Separately, GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner visited GM's Brazil and Argentina operations this week and called Brazil's flex-fuel efforts "visionary." All GM products now manufactured in Brazil are flexible-fuel compatible, and Wagoner said half of GM's U.S. production will be flex-fuel by 2012. The automaker announced this week that it will invest $500 million to bring out a new small-car product lineup in South America.

Quoted by the Dow Jones news service, Wagoner said General Motors "expects to see the U.S. government fully embrace biofuels."

Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Introduced as Part of Baseball All-Star Game Events

It was baseball, hot dogs, Cracker Jack and Chevrolet all over again as the 2008 Malibu Hybrid made its world debut as part of Major League Baseball's annual All-Star Game festivities. The new model gets 24/32 mpg and goes on sale in the fall. The Malibu Hybrid will be on display through the actual All-Star Game on July 10.

Chevrolet says the Malibu Hybrid will be "an affordable hybrid" that gets 2 mpg better fuel economy than its traditional counterpart. The hybrid system will be an option on the Malibu's LS model. It uses a 36-volt electric motor/generator paired with the 2.4-liter Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine and a four-speed transmission. The hybrid system uses the electric motor/generator to supply extra power when needed during startup or passing maneuvers. Full accessory use is enabled when the vehicle is stopped, "so that hybrid operation is seamless to the driver and passengers," GM says.

The new model goes into production in October and will be in dealerships shortly afterward.
