Question of Warranty: 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R, Second Buyer Beware

Question of Warranty: 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R, Second Buyer Beware

Automotive News

It's one of the most sought-after cars in the world, and it hasn't even gone into production yet. The 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R already has a lengthy waiting list, but if the lucky first-round buyers are intending to buy and sell quickly for a profit, they might want to think twice.

According to Jan Thompson, Nissan's vice president of marketing, in an effort to prevent buyers from selling their dealer-purchased Skyline GT-R immediately for a profit, Nissan is considering voiding the Skyline's warranty for the second buyer if the transaction takes place less than one year after the initial purchase.

"That's the route we're looking at," said Scott Vazin, Nissan's director of product public relations. "A warranty decision will be made before the Tokyo auto show."

Voiding the warranty for the second owner is one way for the Japanese automaker to keep the GT-R's price down near the expected $70,000 MSRP.

The near 450-horsepower Skyline GT-R makes its official debut at the upcoming 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. Also, after much internal debate, Nissan has confirmed that the car will be presented in silver, and not the alternate choice of red.

Automotive News : Nissan Rolls Out Fuel-Efficiency Gauge To Boost "Eco Driving"

Automotive News : Nissan Rolls Out Fuel-Efficiency Gauge To Boost Automotive News : Nissan Rolls Out Fuel-Efficiency Gauge To Boost

Automotive News

As part of its ongoing effort to get drivers to think green behind the wheel, Nissan on Tuesday said it is rolling out a fuel-efficiency gauge as a standard feature on such current models as the Altima and Infiniti G35 in the U.S. The company predicts it could "lead to an average 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency."

The device eventually will be featured on all future new models, the company said.

The gauge gives instant fuel-efficiency and average efficiency readings. "By accelerating, the driver would instantly see an increase in fuel consumption reflected on the gauge," the company said in a statement. "Based on Nissan's trials, drivers have tended to improve their eco-driving habits over time, prompted by the real-time fuel-efficiency readings."

The device will also be installed on current models of the Nissan Skyline, Lafesta and Atlas in Japan. Of course, Nissan warns that results "may vary based on individual driving style."

Automotive News

Nissan has announced that its 2008 Altima 2.5 sedan will start at $18,855, including a $625 destination charge, reflecting a fairly modest $280 price increase. The top-of-the-line 2008 Altima 3.5 SL starts at $28,905, including shipping. Nissan is also considering adding features to the 2008 Altima Hybrid, which may result in a price increase of about $100, according to Nissan spokesman Darryll Harrison. "We are looking at adding some features that aren't standard," he said. "It may be just a slight increase [in price]." Altima Hybrid pricing is expected to be announced later this summer. The 2007 Altima Hybrid starts at $25,615, including shipping.

The 2008 Altima coupe's pricing was announced in the spring. It starts at $21,115, including shipping.

For 2008, Nissan adds standard antilock brakes to the Altima sedan and optional XM Satellite Radio. Options for 2008 include a $6,200 technology package for the 3.5 SE model and a $900 package that bundles vehicle dynamic control (stability control) and a full-size spare. A rear spoiler adds another $370 to the bottom line.

Engine choices for the 2008 Altima sedan are unchanged and include the 3.5-liter V6 and the 2.5-liter inline-4 mated to a six-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission.

Nissan Announces New Clean Diesel Technology, X-Trail Diesel Model

Nissan Announces New Clean Diesel Technology, X-Trail Diesel Model automotive wallpaper pictures

Automotive News

Nissan appears to be ramping up its commitment to diesel technology based on two significant announcements here on Monday. The Japanese automaker said it will launch a new clean diesel for use in the X-Trail in Japan in the fall of 2008. In addition, Nissan said a new clean diesel technology shows "great promise" and may be able to meet California's standard for super-ultralow-emissions vehicles, one of the toughest in the world. The details of the clean diesel in the X-Trail, which is not sold in the United States, are fairly sketchy. Nissan said performance and specifications will be released closer to its introduction next year. It said the X-Trail's diesel will be based on the "M9R engine co-developed with Alliance-partner Renault" and will use high-performance catalysts and advanced engine management technologies. "This clean diesel engine is being developed to lower exhaust gas emissions to levels comparable to those of new emissions standards in Japan," it said.

Of perhaps greater importance to U.S. consumers, Nissan also announced that its new clean diesel technology will "be able to achieve cleaner diesel emissions in future vehicles that will meet the stringent SULEV standards set by the state of California." The company's statement says "Nissan plans to do further research and development of the clean diesel technology for commercial application in its future products."

The new technology reduces diesel emissions by using three components: high-performance catalysts, advanced engine control systems and "modulated-kinetic combustion," Nissan said.

Nissan May Take Qashqai Production Home to Japan

Nissan, Automotive News
The Nissan Qashqai is a cash cow. The new crossover vehicle is such a runaway success that the one plant that builds it, in the United Kingdom, is running over capacity. Japanese economic daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that Nissan is considering a plan to launch production of the vehicle at home in Japan.

Between February and June, more than 45,000 Qashqais were sold in Europe, and the waiting list stretches beyond six months. In Japan, where the car is called the Dualis, more than 11,000 have been ordered since the end of May. Originally, Nissan had planned to build 2,000 units per month.

The Qashqai/Dualis is a new attempt from Nissan to conquer the traditional family-car segment, which is dominated by such models as the Volkswagen Golf , Ford Focus and Toyota Auris. Ditching the traditional hatchback format, the car has an SUV-like appearance, and all the convenience features expected in its category.

Nissan Kicks Off Tests of On-Board Breathalyzer

Nissan appears to be leading the pack when it comes to making preventive drunk-driving technology a reality. It announced on Tuesday that it will start testing a new technology in Japan with the intention of rolling the system out in production vehicles in the future. Nissan will test a new on-board breathalyzer system that can sniff alcohol on a driver's breath. If the amount exceeds a specified level, the ignition will be disabled through an interlock mechanism.

Toyota is said to be developing a similar fail-safe system for detecting drunk driving that uses sweat detectors and can sense abnormal steering in advance of shutting down the car. Nissan said its pioneering drunk-driving prevention system will be installed on "daily-operating vehicles where the drivers will monitor various factors such as functionality and alcohol-detection reliability."

Nissan's First-Quarter Profit Drop Attributed to "Weaker Product Mix"

Nissan, Automotive News
Nissan stunned analysts and auto industry observers on Tuesday as it posted a 3.2 percent drop in quarterly operating profit, which it attributed to a number of things, including a "weaker product mix." The rapid consumer shift away from light trucks and SUVs in the U.S. was the main culprit for the dismal report. Nissan's U.S. sales of light trucks such as the Titan were down 12 percent in the first half of 2007. Nissan said its consolidated net income after tax in the first quarter was down 16.2 percent compared with the same period a year ago.

"Our results for the first quarter were in line with our expectations, considering factors such as weaker product mix, higher raw materials prices and the change in effective tax rate," said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan president and CEO, in a statement. Nissan's results are noteworthy, given the brisk sales of Toyota and Honda. But Nissan said a 5.9 percent increase in global vehicle sales in the first quarter still keeps it on track to meet its forecast of a 3 percent rise in full-year operating profit.

Nissan said it sold 875,000 vehicles in the April-June period globally and said it will launch 11 new products globally in 2007. "We are encouraged by the momentum building globally for our new products such as Qashqai, Altima, Livina and Infiniti G35, and we maintain our forecast for the full fiscal year," Ghosn said.

Car Preview : Nissan Rolls Out Watery NV200 Concept Van

Nissan, Automotive News
Nissan lifted the veil on a futuristic van called NV200 on Monday that may take some of the stigma away from workhorse vehicles like minivans and delivery trucks. The NV200 will make its worldwide debut at the Tokyo auto show in October. The Japanese automaker scrupulously avoided any references to soccer moms or plumbers as it rolled out the NV200. Instead, it described the van as suitable for a "professional underwater photographer with 'wet' and 'dry' store zones" in a storage pod that extends from the van's load area. Nissan noted that the "basic concept could be tailored to suit different customers."

The van leapfrogs over conventional vans with the pod arrangement. Nissan explained that, as the pod is withdrawn from the van, the "area left behind is transformed into a mobile office." The front passenger seat swivels backwards on a curved rail to face a computer table, which drops down from the side of the van. Toyota has experimented with swiveling seats in the home market.

"A light commercial vehicle has a specific job to perform, but that's no reason to design a purely rational vehicle with no warmth," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer. The NV200 is a global creation. It was jointly developed in Japan and at Nissan Design Europe in London.

Renault Logan Rolls Out in South America

Automotive News, Nissan
Renault continues its drive to make the Logan a true global car with a South American rollout. Local production has started in Brazil, and sales have been launched all over the region — including further north in Mexico. The Logan is badged as a Renault nearly everywhere, but in Mexico it is being sold as a Nissan Aprio.

Renault's Sao Jose dos Pinhais factory will churn out 40,000 Logan sedans this year and 60,000 units next year. About 60 percent will go to export markets. Just as it does in Central Europe, Logan competes with GM-Daewoo products assembled by local plants.

Renault's marketing tactics in South America include linking up with the Carrefour supermarket chain in Brazil and offering a three-year/100,000-kilometer guarantee on new cars.

In Mexico, the Logan is sold as a Nissan because Renault does not have a presence in the country, while the Nissan brand has been around for decades and has a strong reputation — enhanced by several generations of the popular Sentra. Before the Logan's arrival, another cheap Renault sedan, the Clio Symbol, was built and sold in Mexico as the Nissan Platina.

Prices in any of these countries will be kept under the equivalent of €10,000, or about $13,800.

Nissan Recalls 2007 Altimas for Fire Danger

Nissan's popular 2007 Altima sedan is being recalled to correct a problem with the air filter that may result in a fire. The recall affects all 2007 Altimas with the 2.5-liter engine built at the Smyrna, Tennessee, plant from Sept. 25, 2006 to May 11, 2007, and at the Canton, Mississippi, plant from Oct. 30, 2006 to May 11, 2007.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation said it is aware of 26 reports of fires, of which three were reported directly to ODI and Nissan, and no injuries.

"Nissan has determined that if a sufficiently hot object [for example, a cigarette ash or other ignition source] enters the air filter housing through the engine fresh air intake system and contacts the air filter, the flammability characteristics of the air filter material are such that the filter may ignite," the NHTSA said on its Web site. "If the air filter ignites, a fire may occur."

Vehicles built after the aforementioned dates are equipped with a different air filter.

Nissan will remove the original air filter and install a new unit with improved anti-flammability characteristics. The recall is expected to involve about 140,000 vehicles. The Altima is Nissan's best-selling vehicle.

Nissan Breaks Ground on Russian Plant

Nissan Motor broke ground Monday on a new $200 million assembly plant here that is expected to begin building the redesigned Teana sedan in early 2009.

The facility, which includes paint, trim and chassis lines, will have an annual capacity of 50,000 units. After the launch of the Teana, Nissan expects to add production of the redesigned X-Trail crossover.

The St. Petersburg plant is Nissan's first in Russia. The automaker said it expects Russia will overtake the U.K. this year as Nissan's top sales market in Europe. Last year, Nissan sold 75,000 vehicles in Russia.

Nissan Readies Lane-Departure Prevention Technology

Nissan's Lane Departure Prevention system will debut this fall on the Infiniti EX35 compact crossover utility vehicle, providing drivers an additional safety net beyond today's existing electronic back-ups such as stability control and Infiniti's own Lane Departure Warning (LDW), explained Bob Yakushi, director of product safety for Nissan North America, Inc.

Fifty-five percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S. involve the vehicle leaving the road, he said, so keeping a car in its lane is a good start at eliminating some of those crashes.

The LDP system functions only if the driver ignores the warning from the LDW system, he said. As with LDW, the LDP system is disabled by the use of the turn signal, so intentional lane changes do not trigger a response. Similarly, if the computer notices that the driver has turned the steering wheel so the vehicle heads out of its lane, it will assume that the lane change is on purpose. But if the steering wheel is steady and the car reaches the line dividing its lane from the adjacent one, the LDP system leaps into action.

LDP does not have the ability to take over steering the car. What it does instead is use the tools of the electronic stability control system, the independent braking of individual wheels, to nudge the car back into the center of its own lane.

To use the LDP system, EX35 drivers will have to press an "on" button for it each time they start the car, ensuring they have decided that they want it working. Most drivers won't find the system bothersome, promised Yakushi, who tests Nissan's technologies himself. "The intervention when driving in a straight line is very light," he said. "It is more forceful on curves," he added, because of the extra amount of turning needed to keep the car in the lane in a curve.

Early prototypes of the system were more aggressive and might have bothered customers, but that is not the case with the version that Nissan is bringing to market, he said. "Initially it intervened very hard, but the latest version has been very acceptable."

John McClane Special: Nissan Rolls Out Navara Die Hard 4.0

John McClane Special: Nissan Rolls Out Navara Die Hard 4.0
The good news is that consumers in the U.K. can celebrate the new Die Hard sequel with a limited-edition 2008 Navara pickup called Die Hard 4.0 that goes on sale July 2. The bad news is that it's not coming to North America.

"We don't have anything like that planned in the U.S.," said Nissan North America Spokesman John Schilling.

The Navara is the U.K.'s version of the Nissan Frontier pickup.

Only 444 units of the special Die Hard Navara will be built. Nissan said once all of the vehicles are sold, new owners' names will go into a hat and numbers 1, 4, 44, 400 and 444 will be randomly picked and get a free specification upgrade. The additional equipment includes a voice-activated DVD satellite navigation system with a 7-inch screen and a premium audio system with MP3/CD capability.

The Die Hard 4.0 starts at the equivalent of $37,925. A Die Hard 4.0 accessory pack costs $1,500 and includes a front styling bar, rear parking sensors and chrome lashing rails in the load bed. The truck comes in three colors: "flame (proof) red," "eye of the storm gray," and "a walk on the dark side metallic black."
